Projects » Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program Evaluations

Few organizations have more experience than Philliber Research Associates (PRA) evaluating teen pregnancy prevention programs. This sample of the projects completed by PRA in this area includes the:

AIDS Funding Collaborative which provides funding for the evaluation of a comprehensive responsible sexuality education initiative in grades K-12 in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The evaluation includes analysis of changes in student knowledge, attitude and behavioral intent as well as changes in District policies vis-à-vis sexuality education.

California Wellness Foundation - Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative, was a ten-year initiative designed to decrease the incidence of teen pregnancies by increasing the proportion of teens who delay the initiation of sexual activity and/or effectively use contraception. Philliber Research Associates has followed the progress of seven target communities, including pre-post, door-to-door surveys, and yearly interviews with community partners including school administrators, public health officials, political leaders, members of the faith and business communities. We also tracked the progress of 13 policy/advocacy organizations, evaluated the statewide public education campaign, and measured the outcomes of a statewide professional development activity. Annually, major learnings are presented and recommendations are made for strengthening the TPPI Initiative.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), funded 13 communities to reduce teen pregnancy. PRA was part of a team to evaluate the effectiveness of a collaborative approach to preventing teen pregnancy.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which has funded two rounds of a project intended to help programs adopt science-based strategies to prevent teen pregnancy. PRA has served as the evaluator for the efforts of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy’s Putting What Works to Work project, for the North Carolina Coalition for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, and assisted in training for evaluation with the South Carolina Campaign.

Children’s Aid Society – Carrera Program is a sex education, pregnancy prevention, and youth development program for urban youth considered to be at high risk. PRA conducted a random assignment evaluation in six New York City sites and six sites in other cities across the United States.

Children Services Board of Broward County Florida supported local pregnancy prevention programs through Planned Parenthood and the Urban League. PRA was responsible for the evaluation of this initiative.

Children’s Services Council in West Palm Beach, FL, tries to reduce teen pregnancy in four targeted zip codes with the highest rates of teen birth. PRA has conducted baseline surveys of each of the four communities, interviewing parents and their teens, and tracked program progress over a three-year period.

Connecticut Department of Social Services funds a variety of teen pregnancy prevention programs each year in its cities. These are Carrera-model programs, all evaluated by PRA for more than 5 years.

Family Life and HIV/AIDS Education Programme in Lagos State, Nigeria, provides education to secondary school students. PRA conducts the evaluation of this program.

Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (G-CAPP) has supported adolescent pregnancy prevention programs in three Georgia communities. PRA provided evaluations in each of these communities.

New Mexico Department of Health’s Family Planning Program supports 53 pregnant and parenting teen programs, 6 adolescent pregnancy prevention programs, and 11 young fathers’ projects. PRA has provided evaluations for these projects for a number of years.

New Morning Foundation supports community-wide adolescent pregnancy prevention programs in five South Carolina communities. PRA conducts evaluations in each of these communities.

North Carolina Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program has supported between twenty and thirty projects across North Carolina. PRA provided state-wide coordination of the evaluation of each project as well as conducting the evaluation of most of the individual projects from 1990 to 2000.

Planned Parenthood with numerous affiliates, including Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles in evaluating their work with the Promotoras Program.

The Robin Hood Foundation which funds numerous youth development programs each year, monitoring among their goals, the reduction of teen pregnancy.

Teen Outreach Program for high school-aged students consisting of supervised community service and classroom discussions of key social and developmental tasks of adolescents. PRA conducted a national random assignment evaluation as well a quasi-experimental evaluation between 1986 and 2000.

In addition to this work, PRA is often sought as a trainer to conduct workshops on “what works” in teen pregnancy prevention or to train programs to evaluate their work. For example, PRA will do a series of four workshops on evaluation for programs that belong to the Minnesota Organization for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention.
